It's not just one of Ethereum's L2s. @megaeth is working to become Ethereum's real time execution layer. MegaETH's goal isn't speed, but real time. In other words, it's not just about processing a large number of transactions per second, but ensuring that every transaction is finalized within milliseconds.
Chains like Ethereum, Solana, and Arbitrum operate block-based. Transactions are first collected and then processed in batches into a block. Therefore, finalization time typically takes a few seconds, or sometimes even minutes. Each block contains an ordered, unique list of transactions.
MegaETH, on the other hand, uses a real time event processing model instead of traditional block generation. A single centralized sequencer queues all transactions, similar to a traffic light. Transactions begin processing instantly, without any waiting. Each transaction, or a few, is compiled into a mini block and broadcast. Other validators then check and verify these transactions. Finally, everything is securely recorded on Ethereum.
As a result, it's as if there are no blocks, because mini blocks are being generated all the time. This results in very low latency. The user experience is as fast as Web2 applications.
